Romanian Group makes FUTILE attempt to prevent Prime Minister from drilling to the CENTER of the EARTH
The activist group Mining Watch Romania has created a petition and open letter to the Prime Minister Ciolacu to halt the renewal of the Certej mining liscence. They express concern over not only the environmental consequences of the project, but also the connection between the mine's owner Frank Timis and the infamous Calin Georgescu.
The petition, signed by 23,000 citizens, tells of a deal made between Calin and Frank, allowing the gold mine to continue operation in exchange for campaign support. The group complains that this arrangement would shun transparency and public responsibility for the resources of Romania.
The mine's majority shareholder, Canadian company Eldorado Gold, has also announced its decision to sell its stake in the project. This developments casts further uncertainty on the future of the mine.
